Research Line

Research Line Science Communication and Extracurricular Learning

A growing number of extracurricular activities have emerged in recent years, partly due to the shortage of STEM specialists. These aim to get young people excited about STEM and foster their interest accordingly. However, many of these programs primarily reach those who already receive more support in school. Therefore, in the research line Science Communication and Extracurricular Learning, the IPN is dedicated to systematically linking and researching extracurricular educational offers with school-based learning for different target groups with different educational prerequisites. The aim is to create an educational ecosystem interlinking the various programs.

Groundbreaking Programs of the Research Line

Groundbreaking programs in the research line Science Communication and Extracurricular Learning include, for example:

The Leibniz Research Museum Network is also linked conceptually.

Central Goals of these Programs

The further development of co-design approaches is among the central goals of these programs. The most authentic learning environments possible are created through systematic collaboration between various experts from the disciplines, education and science communication research, as well as the various fields of practice and people working in them. Here, the IPN collaborates with Kiel University (CAU), the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts (MKH), and the Universities of Applied Sciences in Kiel and Lübeck.

The work of the research line, however, is not only aimed towards professionalizing development. The members also want to advance the research itself and implement the findings in existing networks. Unlike in the school sector and in teacher training, practical experience shapes the fields of science communication and extracurricular learning.

Research Topics and Key Questions

The research line is based on three key questions. They are addressed by researchers across departments in various projects.
